Lewis Carroll was the pen name for Charles Dodgson born in Cheshire England in 1832. He was was an English author, mathematician, logician, Anglican and photographer. He was adept at mimicry and storytelling, and was, reputedly, quite good at charades. It was this storytelling that endeared him to the children of a new dean at his church, Henry Liddell. It was widely widely assumed that he derived his own "Alice" from Alice Liddell. This was supported by the fact the acrostic poem at the end of Through the Looking Glass spells out her name, and that there are many underlaying references to her are hidden in the text of both books. However, he repeatedly denied in later life that his "little heroine" was based on any real child and frequently dedicated his works to girls of his acquaintance and added their names in acrostic poems at the beginning of the text. On a rowing expedition with the Liddell children, on 4 July 1862, Dodgson invented the outline of the story that eventually became his first and largest commercial success. The journey had started at Folly Bridge near Oxford and ended five miles away in the village of Godstow. To while away time the Reverend Dodgson told the girls a story that, not so coincidentally, featured a bored little girl named Alice who goes looking for an adventure. Having told the story and been begged by Alice Liddell to write it down, Dodgson eventually presented her with a handwritten, illustrated manuscript entitled Alice's Adventures Under Ground in November 1864. The work was finally published as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in 1865 under the Lewis Carroll pen name, which Dodgson had first used some nine years earlier. The book is commonly referred to by the abbreviated title Alice in Wonderland, an alternative title popularized by the numerous stage, film and television adaptations of the story produced over the years. The illustrations were by Sir John Tenniel instead of done by himself. Dodgson evidently thought that a published book would need the skills of a professional artist. The overwhelming commercial success of the first Alice book changed Dodgson's life in many ways. The fame of his alter ego "Lewis Carroll" soon spread around the world. He was inundated with fan mail and with sometimes unwanted attention. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland has been translated into 125 languages. There have now been over a hundred editions of the book, as well as countless adaptations in other media, especially theatre and film.
